Anyone up for some Pizza?

As 6 sits and watches the world go round and round, he can’t help but contemplate all of those old adages. Like, “what goes around comes around”, “for whatever one sows, that he will also reap”, “can’t put lipstick on a pig”, “you can’t make a silk purse from a sow’s ear”. “Nothing is said that has not been said before” “There is nothing new under the sun” or “History repeats itself”. They all have their roots embedded in past centuries, but their meanings will hold for future generations. All one can conclude is those old fellas like Aristotle/Socrates and Plato, really must have been sitting around and watching the world go round!

Simple sayings as well as simple traditions, “warm an old man’s heart”, and 6 (an old man) knows all-you-all have an aversion to tradition. It really doesn’t matter if you respect or distain tradition, you must face reality, each of our lives are “Chucked Full” of TRADITION.  Here we go again; another long-winded exposition about the importance of tradition, WELLLLL 32, this is not about the obvious traditions, but the truly unique activities that we must pass down to keep our memories founded for the future generations.

Friday night pizza! Since the world revolves around 6, who better than to claim the tradition of Friday nigh Pizza? The tradition has its roots in the 1960’s. “it was the best of times, it was the worst of times”, no matter what time it was, 6 found pizza! It finds its origins around a simple pool table. Both 5 and 6’s friends (yes “you cynics” we did have friends). If one really thinks about it, 0 and 0A were quite brilliant! For they acquired the family a pool table, and located it in the cellar, and as a mark of superior parenting, would allow our friends to gather at our house to play pool! Instead of having the neighborhood juveniles running amiss they were all held captive in the cellar, WELLLL 5, 6 will place a wager, that you still have not reckoned what playing pool on Friday night could have any relationship to Pizza!  WELLL 5, 6 will explain! Friday night, after 6 spent endless hours “collecting”, while the neighborhood “juvey’s” were busy watching “The Brady Bunch”, no matter our activities, we would all meet in the cellar. It was at this point, we pulled our funds together (probably about 5 bucks) and elect two poor souls, who’s job would be to walk thru the snow laden woods (yes, we had snow in them their woods year-round) to Lower Glenshaw, and land at a pizza shop call “Hanks”! (BTW since there is a Lower Glenshaw, is there an Upper Glenshaw?) Hank would hand over 2 or 3 cheese pizzas and a couple bottles of “Purple Passion”. That was the start to a ½ a century tradition.2 foresaw money maker, for a few years later 2 got into the Pizza business, bet all-you-all didn’t know is middle name was Hank! For those who do not remember it was called 5th Avenue tower of Pizza. Not only did we continue the tradition of eating pizza, but that started, the tradition of making pizza! No longer was Pizza considered a snack, but it became a formal meal! 0A and 2 became quite the Pizzaiolo’s. A few years later, 6 was off to University, the tradition deviated somewhat, Friday night turned into Sunday afternoons. The “Collections” had now dwindled leading to 6 having to employee his superior inelegance. What he devised was a very simple plan.  First 6 would visit the local Pizza Hut, find an empty table off in a drark corner, as the “students” would order twice as much Beer and pizza as they could possibly consume. They would leave the Pizza Hut, and leave most of their pizza on the table. (“More Money than brains”. All 6 need to do was walk over to the table, hid the tip, sit down and enjoy a great meal of Pizza and beer, all for the price of a single beer, for 6 was not going to drink beer out someone else’s glass!  Tell me that was not the perfect plan! Once 6 done graduated from university, and was then “married with children”, 6 rekindled the tradition of Friday Night Pizza! By this time the Pizza industry was “all in” on frozen Pizza’s, so not to “buck the trends” 6 would feed his family frozen pizza. As a side note, 6 often thought about doing the Pizza Hut thing, but fortunately thought differently. Ok let us be honest, 6 wanted to, but 6A would not allow it! One has to wonder if Peg would have stopped Al for doing that, after all they spent days in the grocery store because their AC was out! As the girls grew older there were a few times, that we would actually order pizza from a place called Pantera Pizza “Those were the days my friend”. Fast forward to today, to the best of my knowledge (which all-you-all know is infallible) 0A,4,4A,6, 6A, 61,61A,611,62,62A,621,622,7,8 sit down and have Pizza on Friday night!

What in the world, do all of those ramblings have to do with Kiawah, “no Worries”, 6 will tell you! Every year on PVV, at least once during dinner preparation, we all have to take action by opening all the doors and windows, to empty the villa of smoke, struggling to beat the smoke alarm. 6 reviewed the official PVV/FFV journal over the past several years and unfortunately, just like having Rex on the beach, the fire alarm wins with alarming trend. For example, let’s take the latest PVV: Friday morning, sitting on the veranda drinking our morning joe, while eating a muffin or is it “curds and whey”. The objective was trying to reach a consensus as to what we are going to do for dinner! Guess what we decided Pizza! (Must have been Friday Morning) Trip to Harris Teeter, get three already made pizza’s, all we have to do is pop them in the oven for 40 minutes and we will be ready to continue with our Friday tradition! Nice day on the beach, then it was Rex time, we did have a little break in tradition on this PVV, for we did not wait until 5:00 each day for Rex time, this year we started at 4:00 who knows, could be an age thing, or another problem? s that an age thing? “Be that as it may”, the next thing we knew was the beach was empty, other than the “Friday Nighters”, which were walking by just as they have been doing for the past 25 years! Someone had to ask, what time is it? 6 remembers trying to find the official beach watch, and noticed that it was 7:30, ‘Oh My”. ‘So much to do, so little time” We all had to pack, and get to the airport early the next morning! Time for us to pack the tent for the last time, clean the wine stains from the beach table, and properly dispose or hide the remaining beach chairs. We all made it back to the Villa, washed the wine stains from our sand covered bodies, then sat our lazy bodies down, and opened a fresh bottle of Rex! In the meantime, someone decided that we needed to eat! Time to fire up the oven to at least 500 degrees throw in the pizza, and sit down for a fresh bottle of Rex! Within in 5 minutes someone, said why are my eyes starting to water? It was at that point that no one had to say a single word, time to open the doors and windows to get the smoke from the oven out of our villa. The pizza was done, all the remained was to eat the pizza!
